This is a terrible truth. "The human species is living as if it had more than one planet to occupy". And more weighty than ever with the present administration - at first impression, it seemed they were simply overturning their predecessor's policies across the board. But worse than that, they are overturning the earth-protecting policies which hamper the profits of large corporations.
The Dakota Access Pipeline, disavowing all evidence of climate change, dismantling protections for the earth, air and water, endangered animals - not to mention horrific crimes against people who aren't wealthy or white. It's hard to even write about without getting my heat up and feeling frustrated and angry at myself for not taking action. I'm gone off topic a little here, focusing on the crimes of this administration specifically instead of humankind in general, but the ones here on home soil are so much more glaring to me.
In the US, we seem to be living as if we had more than one country to occupy - we are burning through our gorgeous natural resources our identity of strength and tolerance too fast to keep track of. It is overwhelming to think about. But right now, while in school, all I can do is inform, talk about it to folks who will listen, and work to reach the folks who don't share my views exactly. As healers, we are well-situated: people come to us with fairly open minds and hearts, looking for direction. If the approach is gentle and individualized enough, perhaps we can begin to foster a sense of community again that will spread through the hate.
Its so hard to image a person so concerned about their own agenda that they can disregard the concerns of our beautiful planet. I read an interesting fact the other day about the pollution in the ocean. Although I admire the straw movement that is going on I was shocked to find out that it was only .3% of the pollution in the ocean and that 46% was from commercial fishing. To me, it would be a lot more effective to implement laws and fines ASAP against commercial fishing so that they're to allowed to just dump at their convenience.
ReplyDeleteIt's heartbreaking!
